The Stone Hearth

One floor, two eras.
A 1920s craftsman with its original stone hearth had grown a 2010s kitchen addition — separated by a threshold, two floor heights, and thirty years of style. The brief: one continuous dark oak run that makes the addition feel original.
The challenge
A ¾-inch height difference between old and new subfloors, a brick hearth that couldn't move, and a dark stain that shows every speck of dust if the finish isn't perfect.
What we did
We floated the addition subfloor level, undercut the hearth stone to tuck boards beneath it, and laid 5" white oak throughout — stained espresso on site and sealed with three water-based coats. Six days, one crew, zero thresholds.
